Tyler Naquin to make Indians’ Opening Day roster

One of the main questions surrounding Indians camp was answered on Friday when Tyler Naquin was informed he will make the Opening Day roster.

Naquin, the No. 6 prospect in the Indians’ system according to Baseball America, could see extended time in center field, especially in the short term while Michael Brantley continues to rehab from offseason shoulder surgery.

Naquin was an intriguing invitee to spring camp and then had his chances bolstered when Abraham Almonte failed a drug test and was suspended for 80 games. He’s taken full advantage of that opportunity, hitting over .400 all spring and playing a quality center field.

The Indians were in search of help as a fourth outfielder — and potentially a starter until Brantley returns — and in need of someone who can hold his own in center field. Naquin just about forced the Indians’ hands.

It also completed a long road to the majors. Naquin has been among the Indians’ top prospects for several seasons but had his career path slowed by injuries.

“That was one of the more touching ones for us,” Indians manager Terry Francona told reporters in Goodyear, Ariz. “We talked to him and we’ve seen this kid come from two years ago, in our one-on-one meetings, he barely would look at us, to growing into a man and accepting the challenge this spring. We’ve all seen what he’s done with [this opportunity].”

Other moves

The Indians on Friday also optioned first baseman Jesus Aguilar, who struggled at the plate this spring, to Triple-A Columbus.

Also, relief pitcher Joe Thatcher, in camp as a non-roster invitee, was told he wouldn’t make the club’s Opening Day roster. That leaves Kyle Crockett and non-roster invitees Tom Gorzelanny and Ross Detwiler as the favorites for a spot in the bullpen as a left-handed reliever.
