The body of a kayaker who had been missing since Saturday evening was recovered about noon Sunday.
Two men in their 20s were kayaking at West Branch State Park in Ravenna on Saturday evening when their kayaks took on water. A fisherman rescued one of the men, said Matt Eiselstein, a spokesman for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).
ODNR received the call for help about 6:15 p.m. Saturday. Crews searched for the missing man until 1 a.m. Sunday, resuming at 8 a.m.
The kayaker who died was identified as Luke Collins, 20, of Medina, according to Tom Decker, the chief investigator for the Portage County Coroner’s Office.
Eiselstein said investigators are still looking into what caused the accident, though he said it was windy at the time, which could have contributed. He said when a kayak takes on water, this causes the vessel to either capsize or sink.
“Once the water starts to get in, you can’t get it out,” he said.
