An Akron woman was killed in a two-car crash Wednesday afternoon on state Route 18, east of Medina Line Road in Copley Township, the Ohio State Highway Patrol reported.

Laura D. Byrd, 54, was a front-seat passenger in a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am operated by Sherri C. Byrd, 31, both of Akron.

Their car was struck around 3:45 p.m. by a 2016 Honda Accord operated by Justin Miller, 33, of Mogadore.

The state patrol said Miller’s car was traveling west on Route 18 when it went off the right side of the road, struck a guardrail, then went left of center and smashed head-on into the Byrds’ eastbound car.

Laura Byrd, who was not wearing a safety belt, was pronounced dead at the scene; a Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office representative went out to the crash site. Bath and Copley police departments were also at the scene and assisted with the investigation, which is ongoing.

Sherri Byrd and Miller were both taken to Summa Akron City Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, the patrol said. Both were wearing their safety belts.

No charges have been filed at this time.
