AKRON: Two women were injured in separate car crashes Tuesday afternoon.
About 3,900 homes and businesses lost power Tuesday after a single-car crash at Eastwood and Chinook avenues at 4 p.m.
A FirstEnergy spokesperson said about 1,000 people had their power restored within an hour of the crash, and another 1,100 had power returned by about 7 p.m.
“For the remaining 1,800 customers, we need to install a new pole,” she said, “and that could take several hours.”
She said power was expected to restored for everyone by about 10 p.m.
Paulette Tricaso, a 54-year-old woman from Akron, said she was driving west on Eastwood Avenue when she couldn’t stop herself from accelerating and felt a crash coming, so she jumped from her vehicle.
The car, a 1996 black Toyota Camry, continued moving and drifted to the right, clipping a tree.
Then, it continued across an intersection and hit a utility pole, which flipped the car. After, the car continued to move on its roof until it struck a light pole and finally came to a stop.
Both poles snapped and fell down, taking electric lines with them.
An emergency vehicle transported her to Summa Akron City Hospital, where she was treated and released.
Tricaso said she was having problems with her car making revving noises earlier, but she decided to drive it anyway. Police cited her with failure to control.
The other accident occurred at the intersection of West Exchange and South Maple streets in Akron shortly afterward when Elaine Dozier, a 66-year-old woman from Akron, drove through a red light and struck a vehicle driven by Matthew Dujanobic, an 18-year-old from Akron.
Dozier wasn’t cited because the accident was caused by a medical-related issue, police said. She was transported to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Medical Center where she was listed in serious condition Tuesday evening.
Dujanobic wasn’t injured.
