A woman died in a fiery one-car crash after hitting a tree on Merriman Road in Akron on Monday evening.
At about 4:45 p.m., the woman was southbound on Merriman Road between Mayfair Road and Sunnyside Avenue when she veered to the left and crossed into the opposing lane, striking a tree and flipping her Pontiac Grand Am, police said.
The car caught fire, and the impact of the crash detached the driver’s side portion of the car, including the front wheel and door, according to cleveland.com. Akron firefighters extinguished the fire.
The woman was pronounced dead on the scene. No one else was involved or injured.
The woman’s identity was not released pending notification of her family, a spokesman for the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office said.
Debris from the car spread over several yards in the area. According to cleveland.com, officers didn’t find any indication the woman tried to stop before hitting the tree.
Merriman Road was closed for more than an hour from Memorial Parkway to Eaton Avenue while police investigated.
