A driver was killed early Wednesday morning when his car crashed into a tree off of Bath Road in Akron.

The driver was going eastbound about 3:15 a.m. on West Bath Road from Akron-Peninsula Road when he failed to negotiate a curve, drove off the right side of the road onto the soft shoulder, and hit a tree. The vehicle spun, striking two more trees before stopping reverse to traffic on the right shoulder, according to the Akron Police Department’s daily log.

The driver died on the scene as the result of his injuries. Air bags were deployed. The driver wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, according to the daily log.

Police said alcohol, the weather and the winding roads in the area may have contributed to the crash, which remains under investigation.

The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office was on the scene and will release the name of the driver after family has been notified.

Bath Road was closed between Akron-Peninsula and Northampton roads, police said. The road reopened about 7:45 a.m.
